Description
|
National and international public health agencies are increasingly relying on systematic event detection systems using web-based informal sources (news wires, media sources or websites) to monitor the perceived threat of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and other public health threats. Web-based event detection is the first step in Epidemic intelligence, systems designed to provide early warning signals to public health agencies. Today, there are three categories of systems developed and used by different organizations for this purpose: news aggregators, automatic systems, and moderated systems. This session will present the fundamental differences between these systems, the challenges that still lie ahead for early warning/alerting and the opportunities for cooperation between all relevant stakeholders.
