Description
|
The session will focus on the issues and initiatives carried out worldwide for the mitigation of earthquake risk of building structures and industrial facilities. The session will first address the lessons learned from earthquakes, identifying the vulnerability aspects of building structures by comparing the response of old structures with that of newer ones designed with different levels of seismic protection. The session will move to the discussion of the role of construction standards in mitigating the damage of new constructions and to the activities carried out in research through experimental testing for improving the seismic performance of existing structures and for the calibration and updating of construction standards. Fundamental for the mitigation of earthquake risk is ensuring effective communication, which will be addressed in the session by the development of tools com compute the likelihood of an earthquake and forecast the resulting losses in lives and property, enabling users to evaluate the benefit of building code enforcement and of insurance coverage in any location. Lastly, the session will close with the lessons learned from earthquake disasters on mitigating the effects caused by technological accidents, such as the release of hazardous materials, fires or explosions, triggered by natural disasters.
